AT&T Awards Three OU Sophomores With Inaugural Stephenson Scholars Program Scholarships

NORMAN, Sept. HOLD, 2022

AT&T recently selected three rising sophomores from the University of Oklahoma for the Stephenson Scholars Program, a new 5-year scholarship program to help outstanding sophomores at the university become the next generation of business and community leaders.

The Stephenson Scholars Program honors the legacy and philanthropic leadership of former AT&T chairman, CEO and OU alumnus Randall Stephenson, while also focusing on increasing representation in telecommunications and technology industries. The students will each receive a $45,000 scholarship, a paid summer internship with AT&T in Dallas, a full-time job offer upon graduation, as well as professional development and training.

“AT&T partnering with the University of Oklahoma for the Stephenson Scholars Program is a true honor,” said Stephenson.  “These two institutions have track records spanning decades for making the incredible power of education accessible to individuals with a willingness to grow, develop and learn.  This year’s scholarship recipients are impressive examples of what this program is designed to achieve:  identify talented and committed students and provide them with the resources for an intensive three-year focus on educational and professional development.”

The three students chosen to receive the inaugural scholarship are:

  • Carolyn Berggren, of Edmond, Oklahoma, is a biochemistry major in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. She is the chair of the Human Diversity Committee in the Undergraduate Student Congress, as well as a member of OU’s Women’s Health Advocacy, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of women’s health issues.
  • Parker Fikes, of Carlinville, Illinois, is an industrial engineering major in the Gallogly College of Engineering. He is an active member of the Sports Data and Analytics Club, numerous intramural sports teams and has worked as a research assistant for the Data Institute for Societal Challenges, which creates innovative advances in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning and real-world applications. Fikes is also a member of the Headington College Council.
  • Manuvel Sibichan, of Edmond, Oklahoma, is a finance and accounting major in the Price College of Business. He is a member of the President’s Leadership Class; co-chair of the Crimson Leadership Academy, which connects students to campus resources needed to create a meaningful experience for their time in Student Government Association; and a member of the Beta Upsilon Chi Fraternity.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must be a tutor for the OU Transformative Tutoring Initiative Program, a two-year pilot program that provides select high school students with high-dosage math tutoring aimed at closing learning gaps. This program is primarily funded by Stephenson and his wife, Lenise. In addition to the students’ involvement in the Transformative Tutoring Initiative Program, recipients must be a full-time undergraduate sophomore entering fall 2022, in good academic standing with a 3.2 GPA or higher and in need of financial aid.

“We are thrilled that once again, thanks to the generosity of the Stephensons and AT&T, a positive impact will be made on the lives of Oklahoma students,” said Stacy Reeder, dean of OU’s Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education and supervisor of the Transformative Tutoring Initiative Program. “Carolyn, Parker and Manuvel will continue to do tremendous work and are deserving of selection to the Stephenson Scholars Program to advance their own careers with scholarship, internship and job opportunities.”

“The Stephenson Scholars are doing great work on campus and in their communities,” said Steve Hahn, president, AT&T Oklahoma. “We want to show them that hard work pays off by providing this scholarship that we believe will contribute to their economic empowerment and success.”
